The Balladeer Hotel

This project transformed the historic Sparger Building into The Balladeer Hotel, a centerpiece that bridges the past and future of downtown Mount Airy. Built in 1892, this iconic structure was a cornerstone of the town’s industrial heritage and will now serve as a vital hub for connection and celebration.
Part of Marriott International’s Tribute Portfolio, The Balladeer Hotel is a tribute to Mount Airy’s rich cultural legacy, celebrating its musical traditions, the craftsmanship of its granite quarries and textile mills, and honoring beloved local storyteller Andy Griffith.
Collaboration was at the heart of this project. Together with community stakeholders, we revitalized both the exterior and interior to preserve the building’s character while breathing new life into its spaces. On the exterior, we thoughtfully removed infilled windows to prepare for aluminum replica windows that honor the original design. Inside, we carefully refinished the existing hardwood floors and are showcasing the building’s stunning timber construction, brick columns, and walls, revealing their historic charm for future generations to enjoy. This impressive project represents a shared commitment to sustainability, cultural preservation and a flourishing future for the community.
