Guilford County Schools

Peck K-8 Expeditionary School

Made possible by a voter-approved 2019 bond issue, Guilford County Schools has rebuilt Peck Elementary School as part of its master facilities plan. Originally constructed in 1929, the school had not undergone any updates in nearly 20 years. Peck Elementary has reopened as Peck K-8 Expeditionary Learning School and as a magnet choice school, the first of its kind in the county. With an emphasis on creating a student-centered environment that promotes creativity, innovation, collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving, the new spaces transform the way learning takes place.

Spread across three levels, the school has five learning communities that cluster similar grade levels together. Each community includes a common area and gallery spaces to encourage student project displays, iterative learning opportunities and community engagement. The building also features a discovery center with traditional and digital media resources, a visual art suite, outdoor art garden, studios for music, fitness, drama, and dance, and distributed dining. The project also included campus-wide safety and technology upgrades. With a desire to promote a connection to nature and outdoor learning, much of the site’s naturally wooded landscape has been preserved.
