Eastern Michigan University

Mark Jefferson Science Complex Addition and Renovation

Eastern Michigan University set out to transform one of its most significant academic facilities into a modern, flexible environment that would support advanced teaching and research. Originally constructed in 1969, the building required extensive updates to meet modern standards for technology, energy efficiency, and collaborative learning. This effort represented the largest building project in the University’s history—an ambitious investment aimed at addressing long-standing infrastructure needs while creating state-of-the-art laboratory and classroom spaces for students and faculty.

The project combined a complete renovation of 176,000 square feet with an 86,000-square-foot addition dedicated to science and research. Our team managed a three-phase construction process while the building remained active, ensuring classes and research activities continued with minimal disruption. Work included mechanical and electrical upgrades, structural improvements, exterior and roof replacement, and modernization of classrooms, offices, and common spaces. The addition of new laboratories and specialized equipment expanded research capacity, while phased scheduling and safety planning allowed seamless transitions between construction zones. The result is a revitalized, future-ready facility designed to advance scientific education and innovation.
