Allegan District Library

Library Renovation

As part of its long-range strategic planning process, the library's board of directors spent a significant amount of time studying the best ways to improve the space in line with its mission and values. Community members were invited to participate in the process, providing input through planning workshops and surveys to identify priorities in the library improvement. The reorganized, renovated and expanded library building provides a variety of new opportunities for its users.

The project included improved barrier-free access, additional space for children’s activities, a teen room, updated technology, additional programming, and expanded digital and virtual services. Work also included new study rooms, reading areas with comfortable seating including a reading deck overlooking the Kalamazoo River, a business center, a restored Carnegie Meeting Room, improved shelving and storage, a local history area, and open, flexible and multifunctional space. The improvement plan also incorporated the replacement of mechanical infrastructure and equipment that has surpassed its expected lifespan.
