Grand Rapids Community College

Lakeshore Campus

This project consolidated resources and programs from four separate locations into one facility, providing convenient access to public transportation, employers and student services. The College acquired the former JCPenney in The Shops at Westshore Mall to establish its Lakeshore Campus, which is dedicated to serving learners of all ages in the area. This move created opportunities for operational efficiencies and partnerships with other area colleges.

The facility features nine classrooms, four computer labs and five specialized labs. It also includes spaces for advising, counseling and other student support services, along with a satellite library and areas for community use. To enhance the student experience, a variety of study areas are available, ranging from cubicle-style couches and chairs embedded into the walls to private five-person meeting rooms, each equipped with a TV.

The exterior of the building was completely transformed, establishing a modern, welcoming presence while salvaging as much of the existing structure as possible to maintain the project within budget.
