Corewell Health
Corewell Health (then Spectrum Health) awarded the pediatric clinics project to Christman based on an extremely successful previous working relationship as well as Christman’s significant healthcare experience. The clinic is located on floors two through four of Tower 35 of the Michigan Street Development. The clinic space includes minor procedure rooms, dialysis labs, sleep labs, lab draw areas, imaging/x-ray rooms, and doctors’ offices. The pediatric clinics are conveniently located across Michigan Street from the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital and are accessed by a bridge connecting the tower with the hospital.
Christman became involved in this project during the schematic design phase and provided a full range of pre-construction services including value analysis to keep the project within budget. Building Information Modeling (BIM) was used to ensure that all systems would work well together long before installation.
Significant planning and coordination was necessary to ensure that the pediatric clinics’ systems were compatible with the core and shell of the tower. Corewell Health uses a pneumatic tube system, similar to what is found in a bank drive-through, to transfer specimens from the children’s hospital to the labs and clinics across the street. Tower 35 itself houses a maze of pneumatic tubes to transfer specimens to various areas within.
The tower in which the pediatric clinics are located also houses Corewell Health’s consolidated lab among other clinical and lab spaces. Careful logistical planning, attention to detail and scheduling allowed minimal disruptions to the occupied areas of the tower, public elevators, corridors and connector bridge to the children’s hospital.
