YMCA of Greensboro
With the goal of creating a facility that was responsive to the community's needs, this new branch greatly enhanced opportunities for sports and recreation in the area. The new two-story, 55,941 SF building was designed as an open and inviting space. It is home to basketball and volleyball courts, two full fitness studios, wellness and weight-rooms, and a large, elevated walking/running track. Its competition pool boasts a special dehumidification system and is adaptable for the YMCA’s many aquatic activities. In keeping with the YMCA’s family focus, there are four childcare watch areas for children of different age groups. Multipurpose teaching areas and a teaching kitchen provide community educational opportunities. Working on a tight budget, Christman supported the owner by providing rolling estimates that were constantly updated with cost saving measures that would minimize impacts to the overall project scope. Nearly $1.6 million was withdrawn from the project cost during pre-construction, all without sacrificing the building’s aesthetic appeal or function.
