West Pharmaceutical Services
The project's vigorous schedule was broken into three stages with various stages of work ongoing at the same time. The early structural bid package included excavation, concrete and steel. The project schedule required building a clean room before installing the infrastructure utilities, then installing the utilities and constructing another clean room around them which allowed all trades to work at the same time. The work site provided several challenges which required innovative construction solutions. For example, height restrictions of the existing building limited the size of excavation equipment that could be used, and also precluded the use of a crane for the clean room steel erection. This challenge was successfully met through the use of hoists, forklifts and other rigging equipment. The tight working conditions also presented an additional challenge due to the large number of workers required on site to meet the project schedule. In one instance, the flooring trades worked around the clock in alternate shifts in order to install the epoxy flooring system while working around the other trades.
