Lauren Allen’s internship journey at The Christman Company exemplifies synergy between academic learning and practical experience. After interning last summer, Allen is now balancing a part-time professional role at Christman with her senior year in the University of Tennessee’s construction science and management program.
Highlighting her skill and dedication as well as the successful career development pathways that Christman offers, Allen was deeply involved in the expansive renovation of Neyland Stadium, which she described as “the job of a lifetime.” She gained hands-on experience in various aspects of construction management, from handling request for information (RFIs) and submittals to preparing daily reports and overseeing project segments, under the guidance of seasoned superintendents and project managers.
“It was just an awesome experience and a great visual into what my career might look like,” Allen said.
Building on this foundation, Allen pursued a second stint in estimating, further honing her skills and understanding of the industry. Her proactive approach and dedication to learning exemplified the ethos The Christman Company seeks in its interns.
“Lauren represents the ideal outcome we hope for in our internship program,” said Marty Gibbs, senior vice president and general manager for Christman’s operations in Knoxville. “Her enthusiasm, coupled with the practical skills she’s developed here, showcase the real impact of hands-on experience in shaping a promising career in construction.”
Christman’s internship program, designed for undergraduate students, offers a blend of training, mentoring and practical experience across various construction markets. The program aims to prepare students for real-world challenges and opportunities in the construction industry, equipping them with the necessary tools to succeed.
Allen’s journey from an intern to a part-time position at Christman demonstrates the company’s investment, providing students with opportunities to grow and contribute to the team. Her experience is an indicator of the valuable learning and career development that Christman offers to aspiring construction professionals.
“I highly recommend this internship program to anybody,” Allen said. “The people are just very genuine and personable, and they’re good mentors. You can show what you’re interested in, and they will take it and run with it, and give you as much exposure as they possibly can.”
