The world has changed. Events over the last few years have shifted our work and how people choose to chart their future. A shining spot of opportunity is construction. The Associated Builders and Contractors shared a staggering statistic: beyond the construction workforce recruited today, an additional 501,000 skilled workers are needed in 2024 to meet labor demands.
Part of what is feeding this demand is outsized workforce retirement levels, construction mega projects scooping up workers and the lack of support for young people considering construction careers. Recruitment is where Christman sees the opportunity to help our clients succeed.
How do you entice young people into construction? Working in this industry is incredibly attractive and the story tells itself. Opportunities include careers in the field, project planning, corporate services and innovation. Imagine using advanced technologies in virtual design and construction combining 3-D models with user experience. This approach solves constructability issues and improves outcomes—that’s cool.
Jobs in construction require transferable skills that include teamwork, communications and attention to detail. Construction is a hands-on industry that supports creativity, problem solving and provides job security. Christman stands ready, sharing the full picture of working in construction, and shining a light on these stable and lucrative jobs.
This summer, Christman will welcome more than 40 interns to our nationwide summer program from nearly 20 colleges. These students will be immersed in our projects. From jobsite trailers to offices and the field, attracting a workforce is made easier when students experience the thrill of a building rising from its foundations. Christman is attracting a future workforce who shares in the satisfaction of providing facilities that contribute to vibrant communities. Another opportunity to highlight the vast array of careers is through involvement in the Lansing area ACE Mentor program. Christman’s volunteers support the ACE program and its focus on solving the challenges industry professionals face each day.
With worker demands this immense, Christman also partners with Junior Achievement, local school districts and community colleges to inform, attract and engage young people, educating them on the rewarding careers awaiting them in construction.
Imagine a future where aging buildings deteriorate beyond use, schools struggle to provide quality instruction or hospitals lack functional space, all because the shrinking workforce can’t fulfill the demand. Christman is dedicated to a different future. One where communities and organizations thrive, and a skilled and engaged workforce is the answer.
