Central Michigan University’s athletic program is a vital part of its identity and its ability to recruit students, faculty, and staff. They are proud to have one of the best football attendance records in the Mid-American Conference. This, combined with a requirement need to meet the NCAA’s Division 1A guidelines and to improve handicap accessibility, created a need to expand the University’s facilities.
The university’s stadium expansion program provides an additional 10,000 seats, for a total of 30,000 seats. A new press box and, for the first time, nine guest suites complete the stadium expansion. Christman was also the general contractor for the construction of the stadium in 1973.
The project also included construction of an indoor athletic facility. A new, state of the art weight room is shared by two “bays,” one for football, baseball, softball and field hockey, and one for men’s and women’s indoor track. The new facility is designed to address the needs of the student athletes by providing a year-round training environment. It also serves the athletes academically with significant space allocated for studying, computer facilities and rooms for academic advising, tutoring, and meetings. The facility is a significant asset to all of Central Michigan University’s teams and athletic programs.
