When West Pharmaceutical Services, a global pharmaceutical technology company, sought a construction partner to fully renovate its current molding facility on an aggressive schedule, Christman’s expertise in construction management and experience in similar projects made the Christman team the logical choice. The project included an extensive renovation and addition to the existing pre-engineered plant into a pharmaceutical injection molding and assembly facility. Major components of the project included the construction of three clean rooms, a 400- foot long tunnel underneath the injection molding clean room and complete HVAC and electrical upgrades for the building. The injection molding and assembly areas were enclosed with a clean room system, for which Christman also provided design/build services.

The vigorous schedule was broken into three stages with various stages of work ongoing at the same time. The early structural bid package included excavation, concrete and steel. The project schedule required building a clean room before installing the infrastructure utilities, then installing the utilities and constructing another clean room around them which allowed all trades to work at the same time. The work site provided several challenges which required innovative construction solutions. For example, height restrictions of the existing building limited the size of excavation equipment that could be used, and also precluded the use of a crane for the clean room steel erection. This challenge was successfully met through the use of hoists, forklifts and other rigging equipment. The tight working conditions also presented an additional challenge due to the large number of workers required on site to meet the project schedule. In one instance, the flooring trades were required to work around the clock in alternate shifts in order to install the epoxy flooring system while working around the other trades.
